The Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design Communications emphasis combines a background in textiles with journalism. Students work closely with both Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design faculty and faculty in the College of Journalism and Mass Communications. While most students focus on advertising, news editorial and broadcasting, there are also additional options as well.

With a degree in Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design's Communications emphasis, careers are possible in marketing and promotion, fashion journalism and reporting, news media, retail promotion, small business development, or advertising and merchandising.

The NEBRASKA difference

Our program is a nationally ranked, award winning program approved by the American Collegiate Retail Association with a nationally and internationally recognized faculty scholars in merchandising, textile science and apparel and textile design. Students can receive honors and awards at juried competitions, and also gain hands-on experiences through study tours, community service and internships with cooperating retailers, manufacturers, publishers and designers throughout the United States and abroad.

Facilities

The Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design is located in the Home Economics Building on East Campus. Available facilities include a student advising center, computer labs with industry software including Visual Retailing, Lectra, Adobe Creative Suites, Wasatch and Sim Venture, fully-equipped design studios and bio-fiber development laboratories, professional exhibition facilities including The Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, the International Quilt Study Center & Museum, a historic textiles collection, ethnic dress and costume collection numbering over 5,000 objects, and a digital textile printing studio. Fully equipped textile science labs support cutting-edge research in sustainable textile practice and eco-textile development.
