Textile and Fashion Design is a rewarding profession relating physical properties of textiles to the human need for fashionable and functional clothing and home accessories. This option combines the art of design, the science of chemistry and the perspective of history in a rich, challenging learning environment that prepares individuals for dynamic careers at the creative forefront of the textile industry. The department's main objective is to prepare students for successful careers in the global textile and apparel industries.
With a degree in Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design, positions would include Apparel Designer, Product Designer, Training Specialist, Entrepreneur, CAD Professional, Costume Designer, Fiber Artist, Textile Designer, or Technical Sales.
The Textile and Fashion Design program is a nationally-ranked, award-winning program approved by the American Collegiate Retail Association, and has nationally and internationally recognized faculty scholars in merchandising, textile science and apparel and textile design. Students receive honors and awards at juried design competitions, and will receive hands-on experiences through study tours, community service and internships with cooperating retailers, manufacturers and designers throughout the United States and abroad.
Montage is a student organization for all Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design majors. Activities at the monthly meetings include guest speakers, planning for fashion shows and gallery exhibits, and fundraising, and social events that encourage close relationships between design, merchandising, and textile science majors.
The Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design is located in the Home Economics Building on East Campus. This facility contains computer labs with industry software, fully-equipped design studios, the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, the International Quilt Study Center and Museum, and a historic textiles collection, ethnic dress and costume collection.
