Students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry through extensive classroom studies, self-study courses, internships, and tournament participation and player development. This includes a basic background in managing golf facilities and related organizations, business and personnel management, restaurant and hospitality management, recreation, and golf instruction. Graduates receive a bachelor's degree in PGA Golf Management, and with PGA-eligible employment, automatically qualify for PGA membership.
Careers associated with this major include Head Golf Professional, Golf Instruction/Education, Golf Business: Merchandising, Marketing , Sales, Golf Associations, Golf Events Management, or Golf Facility Development. Since the program began in 2004, all graduates seeking employment in the golf industry have been successful.
UNL is one of 19 schools in the nation (and one of only two in the Big Ten) to have an accredited PGA Golf Management program. A strong academic curriculum at a major university, new facilities and state-of-the-art equipment, highly skilled and knowledgeable personnel, and great industry partners all help our students turn their passion for golf into great careers.
Students are required to complete 16 months of full-time, paid internships. These are planned and evaluated under the direction of a full-time internship coordinator. Generally these are conducted over the summer months plus an additional semester, which is why it is a 4.5-year program. Students have conducted their internships at facilities all over the country, and a few outside U.S. borders. In addition to golf courses, students have done internships with golf associations and teaching academies.
Membership in the PGA Golf Management Student Club is mandatory. It meets monthly to conduct business and hear from regional and national speakers who address aspects of the industry. The club also arranges 15-20 club tournaments each semester; students are required to play in at least three of these tournaments as part of the player development program. In addition, students have the opportunity to compete for a spot on teams that compete with PGA Golf Management students at other schools. There are several other perks and opportunities that prospective students can learn about during a campus visit.
Since the program began in 2004, all graduates have found employment in the golf industry upon graduation. The following are examples of current positions of alumni: head golf professional/Canyon, Forest Highlands Golf Club, Flagstaff, AZ; head golf professional, Champions Run, Omaha, NE; Titleist FittingWorks mobile club technician, Dallas, TX; owner/operator of GolfTech, Fort Collins, CO; Adidas golf rep, Tulsa, OK; manager of Austad's Golf, Lincoln, NE.
The outstanding Wilderness Ridge Golf Course, with indoor practice facility, is the primary course for this program, plus 10 additional partner courses – all minutes from campus. There is a state-of-the-art teaching lab containing high-definition, high-speed cameras, launch monitor and putter fitting system as well as golf club design and repair equipment, and a golf simulation lab with two stations. We also have a room in which our students can meet, study, watch the golf channel, practice putting, read golf-related reference materials, access the Internet, and print assignments.
