International

Please visit our global admissions site for more info.

BUT HEY, WAIT. DON’T GET STICKER SHOCK.

Both in-state and out-of-state students have lots of scholarship and financial aid opportunities that can decrease your total cost. Click on the handy buttons below to learn more.

Scholarships

Some scholarships have separate applications, but to set yourself up to be eligible for most, you should do the following:

  • Take the ACT or SAT on or before the December national test dates of senior year.
  • Finish your admission application no later than January 15.
  • Submit your Personal Statement (which you can fill out during your application) no later than January 15.
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before April 1 of your senior year if you want to be considered for need-based aid.

Here are some scholarships available, based on your student type. Click for more details.

Financial Aid

Let’s face it, most people need help paying for school. Good news is, at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, 75% of students receive some form of financial aid to help finance their education.

We also know that this stuff can get complicated. So before you bash your computer screen in frustration, give us a call and we’ll walk through it. Seriously, pick up the phone — 800.742.8800

Here is an overview of the types of aid available:

Scholarships — Scholarships are forms of aid you do not have to repay. You usually qualify for scholarships based on your academic merit, special talents, leadership accomplishments, and/or financial need. Click the “Scholarships” button below to see availability at UNL.

Loans — Federal loans allow students or their families to borrow money at low interest rates, but repayment is required. To be considered for federal loans, you must file the FAFSA by April 1.

Grants — Grants are forms of aid you don’t have to repay. You usually qualify for grants based on financial need, and they’re typically made available through the federal and state governments. Funding levels may vary from year to year. To be considered for grants, you must file the FAFSA by April 1.

Federal Work-Study — The Federal Work-Study program provides funds for jobs for eligible students. Students are awarded the dollar amount they earn over the course of the academic year. If you’re awarded work-study dollars, the Student Financial Aid will refer you to jobs on or off-campus. To be considered for Federal Work-Study, you must file the FAFSA by April 1.

Free Tuition*

*Yeah, okay, so there’s a star next to this one.
Some Nebraska residents with financial need are guaranteed total gift assistance equal to, or greater than, 15 credit hours of tuition each semester through a program called Collegebound Nebraska. Here’s how to qualify:

  • You must be a Nebraska resident
  • You need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 1 to determine your financial need
  • You need to complete the UNL financial aid process by June 1
  • You need to be a Federal Pell Grant recipient (which is automatically awarded based on financial need, if you fill out the FAFSA)

And that’s it. There’s no other separate application. There is no set income level that magically means you’re in, but a general guideline is that a family of four with one student in college and an annual family income of $53,000 or less may qualify.

If you have questions, please call us: 800-742-8800.

One last piece of advice: don’t wait until the last minute. Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. So, the sooner you submit your information, the better.
